Essential Information

Everything you need to know about preparing for and caring for your new PMU.

Eligibility Requirements

Check that you're a good candidate for permanent makeup—ensure safe and successful results.

Requires a Waiting Period

For your safety, the following require a waiting period before you can receive PMU at Modern Cosmetics:

Anti-aging creams or other chemical exfoliants – 2-4 weeks
Accutane or acne medications – at least 1 year
Facelift/Eyelid surgery/Brow lift – 6-8 months
Chemotherapy or radiation – 4-6 months
Fertility treatments/medications – four months
Antibiotics/Antiviral medicines – one month
Prednisone/steroid medication – one month
Blood thinners or fish/shark oil – one month
Brow/lash growth serum/castor oil – one month
Chemical peel, micro-needling, laser treatment – 4-6 weeks
Retin-A/retinoids – one month
Tanning (artificial bed or outdoor) – at least 2-4 weeks (preferably one month)
Botox or other injectables – 2-4 weeks
Brow tinting / brow waxing – two weeks
Vaccine – one week

Requires Medical Clearance

The following require a waiting medical clearance from your provider before you can receive PMU at Modern Cosmetics:

Cancer
Epilepsy
Heart Disease
Hemophilia
Hugh Blood Pressure

Ineligible Candidates

Unfortunately, due to safety concerns, the following conditions disqualify you as a candidate:

Under 18 years of age
Currently pregnant/breastfeeding
Heart disease, mitral valve prolapse (MVP), or a pacemaker
Hepatitis A, B, or C
History of keloid scarring
Organ transplant anti-rejection medications

Results May Vary

The hair stroke techniques do not work on everyone.

Clients with the following conditions are advised that results may vary:

Alopecia – due to changes in the skin and follicles, not all types of Alopecia clients are candidates
Trichotillomania – due to scar tissue, the color will not retain well and may blur
Mature, thin, or vascular skin – we do not recommend the hair-stroke technique for these clients
*Thyroid issues or Graves’ disease – medications will cause improper retention of pigment.
*Large pores or oily skin – we do not recommend the hair-stroke technique for these clients. .
*Frequently Tan – excessive sun exposure or tanning bed use, before or after, will cause premature fading and discoloration

*A third session may be required at an additional charge.

Aftercare Instructions

The healing process is just as important as the application itself. Nurture your new look with care—follow these steps for lasting results and to get the most out of your investment.

General Aftercare

Healing Process: Expect slight redness, swelling, and scabbing in the first few days. Pigment will lighten during the healing process.
NO Touching: Do not touch or scratch the treated area to reduce infection risk.
Avoid Strenuous Activities: Refrain from exercise or any activity that causes excessive sweating for 10 days.
Stay Patient: Final results will appear after the healing process (4-6 weeks). A perfecting session may be needed.

Caring for Brows

Blot Lymph Fluid: Gently blot the brows with a clean tissue every 1-2 hours for the first 24 hours to prevent scabbing.
Keep Brows Clean & Dry: Avoid water, sweat, or steam on your brows for at least 7-10 days. Use a shower shield if needed.
Apply Ointment: Use the provided ointment as instructed, sparingly, and only after the first 24 hours.
No Picking or Scratching: Allow scabs or flakes to fall off naturally to avoid pigment loss.
Avoid Makeup: Do not apply makeup, skincare, or sunscreen on the brow area until fully healed (10-14 days).
No Treatments or Irritants: Avoid facials, exfoliation, tanning, or chemical peels near your brows for 4 weeks.
Protect from Sun: Once completely healed, apply SPF to your brows to prevent fading from UV exposure.

Caring for Lips

Keep Lips Clean: Gently blot your lips with a clean tissue to remove lymph fluid for the first 24 hours. Do not touch your lips with dirty hands.
Moisturize: Apply the provided ointment sparingly 2-3 times a day for 7-10 days. Avoid over-applying to prevent clogging.
Avoid Wetting Lips: Keep lips dry for 72 hours except for applying aftercare ointment. Use a straw for drinking and avoid licking your lips.
No Picking or Peeling: Let flaking or scabs fall off naturally. Picking can cause pigment loss or scarring.
Avoid Irritants: Avoid spicy foods, smoking, alcohol, or acidic drinks like citrus or coffee for 48 hours.
No Makeup: Avoid applying lipstick, gloss, or lip balm other than the recommended ointment for at least 10 days.
Protect Your Lips: Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for 4 weeks. Once healed, use SPF lip balm to maintain color.

Prepare for Permanent Makeup

Prepare for your appointment—your journey to exceptional results starts with you. These are our guidelines to optimize your skin's condition, reduce sensitivity, and improve pigment retention. You set the foundation for the best, longest-lasting results.

General Pre-Care

Arrive Makeup-Free: Come to your appointment with a clean face, free of makeup or skincare products.
No Major Skin Treatments: Avoid facials, lasers, or chemical peels for at least 2 weeks before your appointment.
Relax: Get a good night's sleep and eat a light meal before your appointment.
Scheduling:

Preparing for Brows

Stay Hydrated: Ensure your skin is well-moisturized and hydrated to support pigment retention.
Let Your Natural Shape Grow: Refrain from waxing, tweezing, or threading your brows at least one week before.
Avoid Tanning: Avoid tanning or prolonged sun exposure at least 1 week before your appointment.
NO Botox: Avoid Botox injections near your brows at least 2-3 weeks before your session.
NO Skin Treatments: Do not use retinol, chemical peels, or strong exfoliants on or near your brow area for 2 weeks prior.
NO Caffeine & Alcohol: Refrain from caffeine, alcohol, or any blood-thinning medications for 24 hours before your session.

Preparing for Lips

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your session to keep your lips well-moisturized.
Exfoliate: Gently exfoliate your lips 2-3 days before your appointment to remove dead skin for smoother results. Avoid harsh scrubs.
Avoid Lip Products: Stop using lip plumpers, strong exfoliants, or products containing retinol or glycolic acid at least one week prior.
Cold Sores: If you are prone to cold sores, take an antiviral medication (like Valtrex) 48 hours before and after your appointment to prevent outbreaks.
NO Lip Fillers: Avoid lip filler treatments 4 weeks before your appointment to ensure proper healing.
NO Blood Thinners: Refrain from alcohol, caffeine, ibuprofen, aspirin, or fish oil supplements for at least 24 hours before your appointment.
